How to Clean Glass Ceramic Stovetops
86Glass ceramic stove tops are sleek, clean looking, and generally easy to care for. These tips will help keep the smooth stove top on your electric range looking great.
Daily Cleaning and Care
Keeping your ceramic stove top looking its best starts with general, daily cleaning. Spills should be wiped up immediately, and the stove top should be cleaned after each cooking session using a soft cloth (or cleaning pad specifically made for ceramic stove tops) and the cleaner of your choice. There are products on the market specifically for ceramic stove tops, but other widely available products, such as Soft Scrub, or even regular dishwashing liquid, are also perfect for this job. Simply wait until the stove top cools completely, then apply the cleaner and clean up any spills or grease that accumulated during your cooking session. Rinse the product off with a clean, damp sponge or cloth, and let it dry. Doing this daily will ensure that the stove top stays looking great.
Accumulated Grime
Of course, life doesn't always allow for daily cleaning of the stove. After a few cooking sessions, dried on food and grease may be covering your stove top. When this happens, the best course of action is to wipe the stove top down with whatever cleaner you usually use, and let the cleaner sit for a few minutes. Let the cleaner and the water loosen up any stubborn food and grime, then go back with a sponge and wash and rinse the way you usually would.
Stubborn, Cooked On Grime
If some of the accumulated grime just won't budge after letting the cleaning products sit for a while, you'll need to be more aggressive. The tool of choice here is a straight-edged razor blade. Hold the blade at a 30 degree angle to the cooked on grime, and started gently working away at it. Any cooked on messes should come up fairly easily with the razor. After you have all of the solids up, go over the whole thing with your preferred stove cleaner, and your stove top will look like new.
Accumulated Grease
If your once-shiny stove top is looking dull, even after cleaning with your usual stove cleaner, it means you have a stubborn grease buildup. To combat this, you'll need to purchase a special cleaner for removing grease from ceramic cooktops. I recently purchased a small bottle of this cleaner at Lowe's for less than two dollars. You can find these products generally in the area where they sell appliances. Put the product on the stove top (either all over it or on individual spots) and let it sit for anywhere from a few minutes to an hour. After you've let it sit, take a soft cloth and start wiping. What you will feel, once you get some of the product wiped up, will be a sticky gumminess. Keep wiping. The job of the cleaner was to kind of "dissolve" the grease, and this stickiness means the product worked. You may need to apply and wipe the cleaner twice to remove really stubborn, persistent grease. Once you have, and have wiped it all thoroughly, your stove top will gleam like new.
With these simple tricks and products, your glass ceramic stove top will stay looking its best.

C.M. - I have a flat stovetop, and I have foudn it particulry difficult to clean, even after employing all of the tips here. CeremaBryte seems to just make it sort of greasy and streaky. Any other ideas? It's been a constant fight, and burnt-on food takes sometimes weeks to work off, no matter how much I scrape with the razor.
Oh thanks, I will look for both of those products! This is the second recommendation for the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, apparently it cleans up just about anything! Now I'm dying to try it!!!
My wife swears by cerabryte. She looked for something for ages until she come upon this one. Great article. I guarantee someone here will find this very usefull.
Can anyone tell me whether the porcelain stovetops are the same as ceramic? I know some of these cleaners say flat top, but I have a gas stove with a porcelain top. I have the grease build-up and I have tried everything. I now want to try cerama bryte. Any suggestions for cleaning the grates?
Thanks for all your help!
I just purchased a black smooth top stove (don't really know if glass or ceramic top yet but sure that it is a ceramic) Well unfortunaly, I got a used one, but only been used for 2 weeks. Let me tell you I don't think anyone cleaned it, ever!!! My Mom & I cleaned it for about 2 hours yesterday when I got it home. The oven is perfect & I could tell someone use easy off on that b/c they had left some white stuff behind. The top of the stove is matted though with grease or who knows what, we got alot of it off with HOT water on a dish cloth. I wanted to know before I go purchasing alot of cleaners, which one should I try 1st? Once I get it back smooth, I'm sure I can keep it clean with what you have told me to do. Do you think a blade would be my best offer to use, Also my mom uses that crud cutter you were speaking of before, will that hurt it? Thank you for your time!!!! Jenny, NC
Thank you for your helpl.
My glass-top electric stove had black 'spots' which will not come out with ANY of the products mentioned. Itr appears that this is 'baked into the glass". Any iudeas?
black ceramic top stove has uneven "marks" that won't come off no matter what I do or use. They're almost like wate marks. What can I do?
Great tips - I also use the Bar Keepers Friend cleaner (also good on the bottom on my pots and pans). You just have to let it sit for a minute to get the really tough stuff off.
Please let me know if anyway to get foggy look off ceramic stove top? Also I heard use baking soda with soft cloth for scratches. Would appreciate any comments ASAP.
Thanks,
Susan
I have a beautyfull looking ceramic top other than a round spot on on the expandable element which does not look like grime or anything at all sitting on top of the ceramic. To me it seems as it has penetrated the ceramic and cannot be reached by cleaners. Looks like a water mark. I have just purchased this stove 2 months ago and I have only use this particular element twice.
Any help will be appreciated Thank you
How do you clean the "hazy" that appears on the glasstop stoves? My stove is black an nothing I have used to this point will keep this "hazy" from reappearing after it is cleaned. It may look good for a very few minutes and when I recheck the top, the "hazy" is back again. Please help.
i accidently put aluminum foil in the bottom of my new ceramic top stove. it baked on before i realized that it was the heating source! i feel really dumb right now and have no idea what to do to take it off. Help!!!!!!! what do you suggest?
To remove the haze from the stove top simply spray with window cleaner and wipe off just as you would clean your windows.
Pleas help! I put aluminum foil at the bottom of my ceramic stove to stop any leakage from cooking, I now cannot get it off. HELP ME.
My husband suprised me and bought me a ceramic top and i have found some scratches that have come about from ware and tare. Any ideas how to get rid of them?
I have a ceramic stove top and put some aluminum foil on th top, can you tell me how I can get it off or do I need to buy another top.
I have a G0E profile stovetop the glass is always streaky and I can not get the burners clean. I had heard soak them in amona it dose not work. The base is always dirty I cook every day.
i have some stains do you have any good home remedies for getting them off?
I have an electric black glass top stove and I love it. I use soft scrub and grease lighting on it after scrubbing then spray with Windex. I have burned stuff on it but have managed to get it off after a few days of turning on the burner cooling it then scrubbing again. Mr. Clean magic eraser also works on some stuff. Ammonia will also get off the grease and loosen some of the burned on stuff.
Enjoyed this hub and all the good ideas for cleaning.
As for the aluminum foil burned on the bottom, I did that and ended up having to buy a new bottom for my stove. It only cost about 27.00 $ from sears(where I bought it )and was easy to put in. Nothing I did would get it off. Hope this helps. Jeanne
Hello... I have a glass top stove. My husband used a porcelain roaster on the top of my stove to make gravy in, and after that my stove top has had a black circular mark on it, at a burner site. I have used a razor blade, bar keepers friend, oven off glass top cleaner, and the cleaner that came with my stove. Nothing has taken the mark off. Is there anything else to use, that will take the mark off.
Hi as mentioned above I put some foil onto my ceramic cooktop and now I can't get it off or clean it. Can someone help me???????
I have a white electric ceramic cooktop. There are many commercial cooktop cleaners available. Without having to buy a special product, what are the three best cleaners which are commonly available in most households?
I am a military wife living in Japan and we have a white glass stovetop. I couldn't get anything to keep it clean and then I found a little scrub pad out at a local Japanese store that works wounders. It "velcros" to the plastic handle and is about the grit of a very fine sand paper but made of a rubber/plastic. I will try and find an American product that is similar but this one is GREAT
i have teid windex and dishwaher soap and nothing will take the spots off my black flat top electric stove. i have only had it for about 2 weeks and i dont know what to try now. will razor blades not ruin the top?
i also have a white haze on my black glasstop stove.
i think its because i cleaned the glasstop with a sponge and dishwasher detergent (the detergent for the dishwasher not handwashing) when it was cooling down, like i usually do with handwashing detergent and the the entire glass top is full of white hazy stains.
is there anything i can do?
stupid dishwasher detergent. my sink is full of white stains as well, because i started using the dishwasher detergent for handwashing.
what do i do? my mom is going to kill me.
Ceramabryte has a kit at homedepot for 9.99 includes a bottle of ceramabryte, a nylon scrubber, and the hand tool with razor blade included works wonders and it takes standard size blades for easy changing when the blades get worn. For those using products no reccomended for your stove tops the products made for these stoves contain a wax that not only cleans the stove but helps protect the glasstop from scratches and by not following manufactures instructions can void your warranty
I have white glas top I us to clen it cerama bay, bat it keep yelow . someone can help my haw to clean it.
First, wipe the superficial loose spills off with a damp paper towel. Use a razor blade tool only if any of the remaining stains are piled up enough for scraping (which may not be the case). For remaining stains, use CeramaBryte (or similar commercial ceramic stove top cleaner) and designated cleaning pad if the area to be cleaned is relatively small. If most of the burners need to be cleaned, sprinkle Bar Keepers Friend over soiled surface and scrub with designated cleaning pad. Baking soda works, but not as well, and it leaves a gritty residue if not carefully removed. White vinegar does not work well.
why would anyone want a stove top that has to be cleaned with a razor regardless of what people say these stove tops are NOT easy to clean.. stick with the coil burners you will be happier
I have to clean the top of my stove after every use.
that includes heating water... the metal makes a residue on the top according to the manufacturer. It can't be helped no matter what kind of pot or pan or no matter how clean they are it leaves marks. that have to be scrubbed off.. Have tried every cleaner mentioned and some not mentioned and it is still a lot of scrubbing everytime it is heated up... not from grease
DO NOT BUY ONE OF THESE FOOLISH THINGS AND IF YOU DO NEVER EVER BUY A WHITE ONE
Very hard to take care of . ok for anyone that is not a serious cook and just wants something pretty to look at.
I have a blk glass or ceramic not sure which, was in 1 year old house I bought with no paper work for it. I love it I have had lots of thing burnt on it and some left on over night or couple days. Have had it 4 years now. I use scouring pads from dollar store if is real bad very carefully. I use weiman glass stove cleaner for easy clean & shine. Knock on wood but I haven't had any trouble or scratches. I love my glass top
I just moved to a house that has a white flat stovetop. I've only cooked on it 3-4 times so far, and yeah it needs scrubbed after every use. I would never purchase one of these stoves, they are impractical. It only looks pretty when and if you get the marks off of it.
I clean my smooth top stove after each use and after 4 years the top still looks like new. The cleaners designed for this type of stove top are best to use. For tough grease spots I use a blue 3-M pad. I clean the stove while the burners are still a little warm and have no trouble at all. (Weiman Glass Cooktop Cleaner) If the burners get cold before I get around to cleaning the stove, I just turn them back on for a little bit to warm them back up.
I would NEVER go back to a traditional stove top, I'm all about the smooth glass/ceramic tops...
I have a stainless steel new stove--black glass top or ceramic--do not know the difference--used a new skillet one time--and a long streak appeared in the center of the burner from center to left edge where some brownish color appeared--used a cleaner recommended by the appliance store--cleaned once--no success--waited a few days--repeated the cleaning--brown coloring comes off and it looks as if some of the black color is missing as if rubbed off. I am very upset. What could have happened? Nothing over spilled from the new skillet recommended for that kind of stove top. Imagine--a first-time use!!!
I had set my pan on a potholder and when I put the pan back on the stove the potholder stuck to the pan and I set it on the burner. The potholder burned on the stovetop. Unable to get it all off. Any suggestions???
Have I missed an answer to Liliana's post? I am a "serious" cook, who really likes clean lines and so manages to keep a black smoothtop Electrolux shinny and clean with Cerama Bryte, however, just like Liliana, I have a singular "spot" that almost looks like something from below - one has really look for it, but I know it is there and it is making me crazy. Tried almost all seemingly harmless suggestions here, but to date, nothing has removed this "water-like" mark. Please forgive if I have somehow overlooked the answer given to Lilianna, but anything you can repeat and/or add will be most sincerely appreciated.
I have used all of the regular marketed products to clean glass tops with success. I also use, once in a while, a mixture of rubbing alcohol and denatured alcohol to wipe the top after I clean it...
I have a two year old glass top stove. This morning I cooked some scrambled eggs in my regular pan. Now I can't get the pan loose from the glass top even though it's completely cooled. Note: I'd wiped down and even dried the top before I put the pan on to cook the eggs. It is stuck good! What to do?
I have a fridgidaire black glass cook top, the mfg info warns never to use any cleaner with amonia - such as windex, because it can cause discoloration or a haze. I have followed the mfg advice on cleaning since purchasing (4years ago), I have many small scraches and a couple of dark areas over one of the heating surfaces, it is a smooth spot and does not look like a burned on build up, any way to fix this? I did try magic eraser and baking soda.
After trying a few different cleaners, vinegar, baking soda, I continued to have rings around my burners (a some discolouring on the burners too) I admit, I am not a good housewife, and food has been left to cook and stew. I have been cruel to my ceramic top stove. Tonight, I looked at my stove and decided, it is me, or you! I combined a couple of methods and they worked! I laid out tea towels and soaked them with white vinegar (I used the tea towels so that it would not evaporate as quickly as if I just put the vinegar on by itself) and I walked away for 45 minutes or so and watched some tv (did I mention I am not a good housekeeper?) Then, I went back and used baking soda and a j-cloth, as well as a plastic scraper (razor blades scare me! I am afraid I will get carried away and scratch my stove top) It took a lot of elbow grease, but my stove top glistens now (except one element that I got a lot off of and is currently doing another soaking in vinegar while I type this!) I was VERY impressed with my creativity, as it is the first thing that has worked on my stove top, and it took off the stuff, that after some reading, really should not have come off. So, if you are dealing with some stubborn stains, I recommend giving this a try!
I will NEVER buy another glass top stove. I have tried everything. Even bought a Shark product that is suppose to steam off ANYTHING. I can't stand the glass top and by the previous comments, I see so many other people that can't stand it!
Finally some sensible remarks This is the dumbest idea that I have ever seen. whoever designed this typr of stove should be shot. I don't care what anyone says these stoves cannot be cleaned easily no matter what kind of cleaner that you use. AVOID THESE LIKE THE PLAGUE
Microfiber Cloth (Also sold in Warehouse Shop Clubs as 'car detailing cloths') work very well for in between clean ups. The trick with these cloths is to use them dryer than damper. My tip is with wet hands (say after washing them) use a cloth to dry them and that is enough moisture to make them magic! Too damp and they are useless. They work great for washing windows too - I have cut down on my paper towel consumption as well! Last tip - when washing, don't use fabric softener.
I use VIM "cream" cleaner. (not the spray) It's very similar to Cerambryte - but much CHEAPER. I just use a nice soft paper towel - squirt on just a little VIM CREAM - rub it around in a circular motion - then with another piece of paper towel, I buff it! I use the buffing paper towel for the next cleaning and a new piece to buff with.
By the way - this is my THIRD smooth top range. My first - 33 years ago - was Corningware (white) - and I hated it - hard to clean and stained. The last two are Ceram glass tops (black) - they are so much easier to clean. A razor blade (in a handle) works great for the "crusties" just keep it flat to the stove top and at a low angle.
Wish I would have read this page first, I would not have purchased a ceramic top stove
Comet and a scotch green scrub pad, then windex when cool. however, i got foil on my stove top, stupidly, and now haven't been able to get it off.....foil...help!
I have a black stain on my electric stove top it feels very smooth like nothing is on it I tried everything possible to remove I even called the company which I bought it from.Any suggestions?
Thanks
Nicole
As experts in cleaning homes we are often faced with challenges like stainless steel and...yes ceramic/glass oven tops.
I have personally restored many unloved and abused oven tops to a gleaming shine and I'll share my methods with you.
I have tried many products, including steam cleaners (rubbish for this) that are both expensive and ineffective. However, a product called "Hob Brite" @ £2 a bottle is both fantastic value and very effective.
I shudder when I read of "metal scrapers and razor blades" being used as they can easily damage the finish and you! A razer blade in a protective "sheath" such as those sold in DIY stores for scraping paint of windows etc is the safest way to use a blade. but be CAREFUL!
The method I prefer is to use Hob Brite with a pan scrub, you know, the yellow and green type? Sponge on one side, scrub on the other? Dont use Brillo pads or wire wool types, they'll damage the finish.
Draw a small ring of hob brite cream around each of the "pan " areas and work in circular motions with the green side of the scrub pad. You may need to scrub the burnt on areas quite hard or even repeat the process a couple of times - but it will come off!
Flip you pad over to use the sponge side and lightly wipe the to down - dont try to take all the cream off yet, we're just checking if any more work is required. If it its, add a little more Hob Brite and repeat the scrubbing!
Once you have cleared the burnt on bits, rub off as much as you can with the sponge, then wipe down with an old tea towel. You might even need a splash of soapy water as the Hob Brite cream is "greasy".
The magic finishing touch is to polish off with a micro fibre cloth, possibly with a glass cleaning product for that ultimate shine - voila - a perfectly shiny ceramic oven top for less than £3 and a little "elbow grease".
i was making jelly and it boil over and now i have a carmal mess on my stove smooth top .......... soes anyone know how to get it off will baking soda water pasta do the trick
I have the same problem as Nicole. I did not see any remedy for just this situation. It isn't grease. It looks like the glass (bluish top) just wore off. I've tried many, many things and that big black splotch is still there! Help!
I have a black smooth ceramic top and LOVE IT!! The only problem I'm having is a haze that seems to be UNDER the surface. What could it be?
you all have to use Sun and Moon. A cleaning agent. It is the best for stoves. It makes them shine like brand new. I have a black top/glass top stove and it's the only thing I use. I have a little scrubber, for the overflows.
I made a paste of my Cascade dishwater powder and warm water............spread the past on the burner and let it set for 20 30 minutes. Most everything came off the first time and then I repeated it
Have used Vim on my black ceram/glass top with great results BUT I was away and my family isn't as diligent at cleaning it - now I have some "fogging" type stains on the burners - I think maybe from condensation or water. Have rubbed and scrubbed but no luck. There's no texture to it just looks like a milky/foggy stain. Any ideas? - If I don't turn on the range hood light you don't notice it - hope that's not my only option.
good read!
I have a haze mark also. They just replaced my stove top two days ago because of the same situation. Any ideas on getting the haze off??
I have a problem with my cooktop - the white haze which will not go away. according to the above messages - a lot of people have the same problem. what to do?
i used soft scrub with bleach and what didnt come off with that came off with the razor blade...thanks for the tip :)
I accidently melted foil on the inside of my brand new porcelain Wolfe oven. I put the foil trays down to keep it clean. Instead I got a nightmare!! I was just going to replace the cavity but Wolfe doesn't make a cavity for this particular oven (of course). I have looked all over on different blogs and websites to find a product that will work to get this stuff up. I am so upset with myself. Please help!!!!! I tried Naval Jelly, Oxy clean (I made a paste and let it just sit and try) - none of those worked. There has got to be something out there. Thanks.....
I hate my black glass/ceramic (whatever it is) stove. Since day 1 we can't keep it clean. The 'Whink Glass/Ceramic Cook Top Cleaner' works the best for me out of all of them - and trust me, I tried them all- I have tons of full products under my sink. I had the stove 1 year, it looks like 10. I have those mysterious "water marks" also. They are under the glass- they don't appear to be anything I could have caused - they are certainly not on top and cannot be scrubbed off or felt with your finger. They appear to be slowly multiplying and are also on burners that I barely use.
I also have some hazing, but I thought mine was from scrubbing the darn thing so hard. I also have a few small scratches/dings from who knows what.
But when you order take out just so you don't have to fight to clean your stove, there is something wrong with your stove. Who would make something to cook on so sensitive to all foods and liquids?- including water! I can not use my hood light because I can't stand to see that top. I have a Maytag, but this doesn't appear to be a manufacturer issue. I won't ever buy another. We were sorry since the first time we used it. If anyone has a suggestion for dark water marks, please help. I suggest the Whink for everything else.
I have had my stove (black top) for about 5 years and I love. I am not the greatest house keeper, but have managed to keep my stove looking like new, until my husband started cooking. I didn't clean it every time I used it but a couple times a week. I noticed last night that there is a dark spot on one of the burners. It is smooth and can't be scraped off, I tried. It is almost like it is under the glass. I got so mad with my husband because I had just told me a short time ago to please clean the stove when he was done using it. I haven't tried any thing except the glasstop stove cleaner and a razor blade
I wiped a washcloth on my black ceramic stove top on side of the cloth is cotton the other side is a like a plastic scrub pad. Anyway the plastic from that scrub rag got stuck to the burner when I thought it was cooled down and it was still hot and I cant get it off is it safe to use a razor wont that scratch it? I just bought the house and the stove was put in brand new and this makes the whole kitchen look like krap someone please help.
Patti
I had two stove tops of ceramic/glass. The first was a white stove with a grey top and I had that for many years and never a problem. Over a year ago I bought a new Sears Kenmore stainless stove with a ceramic top. A couple weeks after I got it, a pot of spaghetti boiled over on it and it's been milky white every since and now a second burner where the pot sits, is totally milky white. Feels like it's Etched in.
I've used:
Baking soda/water
Ceramic Stovetop cleaners (the ones that came with and others)
Soap and water with a sponge
Scotch Brite non scratch pads with everything from comet
to window cleaner
Bathroom cleaner
salt
lemon juice
razor blades (gently - there is NO raised gunk at all)
even Lime away.
I have not tried Bartender's secret but I have a feeling that the stove is RUINED.
NOTHING and I repeat, NOTHING works.
It's too bad it can't be reglazed. I might need a new stove. I might convert go GAS because I hate this nasty looking stove so much. It's pretty blaring. I set a dishtowel on top of the larger area when people stop by just so they don't have to see it!
just bought a stove w/glass ceramic top for my 80 year old mother. thought that it would be easy to keep clean and since the top was flat more manageable surface for cooking. BIG MISTAKE!
I laughed when a contributor said " a little elbow grease ".
boiling water spills stain the surface.
By the way it is a KENMORE @ Sears. mom loves Sears.
Stay away from this product if u want to have free time for important things or u better do some arm/shoulder strength building.
thanks to all with ur cleaning tips.
would not mind hearing from the engineers of this more "COSMETIC PRODUCT" then it being "FUCTIONAL".
if i get my way, back it goes... it has been less than a week old and i'm tired of hearing about the "dirty looking suface"...
I have hated my white glass ceramic top stove since I bought it over 3 yrs. ago. I can't wait till something goes so wrong with it that it needs replaced. When we bought it (Maytag) I asked specifically whether the white would be hard to clean. The color range I wanted supposedly came with only the white top. I have cussed this tove out so many times I finally resorted to using a pumus stone on it. It takes off all the burnt on food plus the top new stains. It does not take off discoloration, but it looks clean. A year later at Home Depot I found out this Maytag model did come in black.
I will go back to the electric coil when this one bites the dust. Other members of my family have the black. They hate it also, but it at least looks cleaner than mine most of the time. Nuff Said.
I am buying a new electric range this week with a flat cooktop. I want to spend $500- $800. Which cooktop type is easiest to maintain and clean, glass or ceramic? and.. which manufacturer has the best electric range top and overall range performance. Does color matter, black gray, speckled or white? Thanks for your help in advance!
I purchased a Fridgidare black ceran cooktop a few months ago. Within the first week the thing had a white haze on the burner. I called Fridgidare and they said to put vinegar on it and let it sit. That did nothing. I tried everything to get this haze out. Fridgidare said it was a cosmetic thing and it would not be covered under warranty. I will never purchase this type of stove or a Fridgidare product again.
STOP IT! STOP ruining your glass/ceramic stove tops with all these IDIOTIC tips to clean your appliance using methods that are NOT listed in your owner's manual or recommended by the manufacturer!!! I'm totally shocked at the amount of stupidity that pervades here. READ YOUR OWNER'S MANUAL FIRST and THOROUGHLY! This is the single-most important thing you can do. PREVENTING spills and properly cleaning them when they do occur is the only way to prevent irreversible damage to your appliance. DO NOT let food bake on in the first place; however if they do, follow these steps: 1) IMMEDIATELY remove the pot/dish, turn off the burner, and while the burner is still hot, carefully dab the food/spill off with a CLEAN WET paper towel, being careful not to burn yourself on the surface or from steam and avoid spreading the food around too much. 2) Let the entire stove top cool COMPLETELY. 3) If the food is already baked on, place a SOAKING WET paper towel over the crusted/stained area and allow the water to soak into and loosen the food. 4) If crud is still present, place a few small drops of CERAMIC COOKTOP CLEANER on the crud/stained area and work it in with a WET paper towel. If the crud still persists, use a CERAMIC COOKTOP SCRUBBING PAD (not just any ordinary scrub or scowering pad) along with a few drops of CERAMIC COOKTOP CLEANER to remove the remaining residue. 5) Clean the entire cooktop by putting a few drops of CERAMIC COOKTOP CLEANER on the surface and wipe with a DAMP PAPER TOWEL. 6) Use a CLEAN dry terrycloth or microfiber cloth to remove all cleaning residue. That's it! For everyday cleaning you should repeat steps 5 and AFTER EACH USE. Taking a few moments to do this after each use will save you a lot of time, effort, and frustration than if you wait, or before you make matters worse by cooking on a dirty surface thereby baking food/grease onto the surface! NEVER, NEVER, EVER USE ANYTHING BESIDES THESE ITEMS TO CLEAN YOUR CERAMIC COOKTOP: CERAMIC COOKTOP CLEANER, WATER, PAPER TOWELS, TERRY- OR MICRO-FIBER CLOTH OR CERAMIC COOKTOP SCRUBBING PAD and method above. If you do not heed this advice, you will ruin your glass cooktop PERMANENTLY. For those who have those smooth, water spot-looking stains/discoloration, SORRY, but I'm afraid if they do not come clean using the method above, you will have to live with them. The likely cause is from using a pot/dish not recommended by the manufacturer; from allowing a pot/dish to cook dry on the surface; or from placing a cold pot/dish on a burner that is already hot on the cooktop. What you are seeing is not a stain per se, but the result from a chemical reaction between the pot/dish and the hot cooking surface that has changed the appearance of your cooktop FOREVER! FOREVER, do you hear me??? Trying to remove these is in vein and you will only frustrate yourself and cause greater damage to your cooktop if you try anything else besides the method above.
You may, repeat *may* be able to get some of those smooth water spot looking stains/discoloration out if you follow these steps. 1) First try the method above. If that doesn't work continue on... 2) Make sure your glass cooktop is completely cool, then pour olive oil onto the stained area. 3) turn any burners on high where the stains/discolored areas are and let them get red hot for about two minutes then turn off the burners. 4) Sop up as much olive oil with a paper towel being careful not to burn yourself. 5) After the stovetop has cooled completely, clean the entire cooktop by putting a few drops of CERAMIC COOKTOP CLEANER on the surface and wipe with a DAMP PAPER TOWEL. 6) Use a CLEAN dry terrycloth or microfiber cloth to remove all cleaning residue. 7) If the stain/discoloration is still there, apply a HEAVY amount of CERAMIC COOKTOP CLEANER onto the stained/discolored area. 8) Cover the stained/discolored area with WET paper towels and wait about 30 minutes. 9) Lightly buff the stained/discolored area where the still wet cleaner is with the paper towels. 10) Remove the paper towels and allow the cleaner to dry completely. 11) Use a TERRY CLOTH TOWEL to buff off the cleaner residue. 12) Repeat steps 7-11 two or three times. If the stain/discolored area is gone, good for you! If not, sorry. I don't know if there's any science to this method, but it has worked for me several times. The trick is to get at the stain/discolored area as quickly as possible and don't allow it to bake onto the glass.
I just bought a black ceramic top stove. I cooked cheeseburgers the other night. I got grease on the stove, I tried to clean it with everything in the house but it left white foggy dots all over it. My friend told me to buy some Comet cleaner and add water to make a paste. IT WORKED!!! DON'T waste your money on stove top cleaners!!!
For those of you who have problems with burnt on foil - try laying a clean tea towel on the spot soak it with "Apple Cider Vinegar". Be sure it's Apple Cider Vinegar, NOT White Vinegar. The acid in the vinegar should start to disolve the foil. You may need to repeat this process several times, but once it's up clean as usual. I used this in my oven several years ago and it worked quite well.
Read all the comments above and thought that nothing would help with my problem, which was boiling a pot dry and leaving a huge discolouration which seemed to be in the glass and not on top, which I thought I would never get rid of, but a product called Cerapol worked wonders. Apply a small amount and start rubbing with paper toweling in small circles. You do need to use a bit of mussle and repeat this serveral times and if necessary use the scraper to get any small amounts off and then polish with polish rag. The end result was perfect
This evening my husband took a terry tea-towel to dry the black polished surface but it was not completely cool.
It has left a large rubber tectured mark on the front large burner
I have tried the ceramic cleaner and it does nothing, should I try the razor blade trick.
We purchased this Kitchenaid two oven, ceramic black top one month ago.....what a mistake, never again.
Any suggestions what I can do now.
I hate our ceramic grey/black smoothtop stove. we have black spots that will not come off no matter what we use. I would never buy another one like it. If you are a cleaning fanatic and swoop down and clean every little spill instantly you need a real life. I have an idea why not have a top layer of clear glass and the design part below the clear glass so it cannot be stained or discolored.
I have had my gray glass top stove for about 5 years and ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!! Would never by a coil stove. The few minutes it takes to clean after each use is no more difficult than cleaning coils. However, just recently there has developed on the glass top a small (1/8" diameter) black mark that will not come off. It is completely flat and does not feel as though there is anything there. Any suggestions?
I read a million blogs and found that although using a straight edge razor worked, it required a lot of work. So I sharpened a very flexible paint scraper and it works awesome. It has the same affect, but covers a much larger area and has a handle. I spray down the top and let it sit for a couple minutes (once cooled), then scrape away. Ive used this technique for 2 years and still not a scratch! I now use it to get stubborn things off of my countertops as well. The trick is to be careful and make sure that you keep the angle VERY low.
hello,
BIG problem on glass, black, stove top...melted a pan on the burner....the bottom of pot came off and the aluminum core (?) melted onto glass top!!!
any suggestions or should I just purchase a new stove? think I will go to gas this time?? thanks.
The best way to prevent persistent stains on a glass cooktop is to clean it regularly. Regular cleaning of a glass or ceramic stove is pretty basic. Simply turn off the glass top stove and wait for it to cool. Then, by using a clean dishtowel and a little bit of water and mild dish detergent, wipe down the entire stove.
Great hub, thanks for the tips.
can i by a new top for my glass top range
Have a whirlpool glass top stove that has black marks that will NOT come off. This stove is a replacement by Sears for the first glass top stove I bought, a
Maytag with a white top that discolored immediately. I had bought the expensive type pans the manufacturer recommended. The repairman said it was a defective top and because it was new they let me exchange it. That was about 2years ago and I hate this stove. I am going back to a coil type. The technology is not there yet. Don't buy one of these stoves.
